You may have heard the trick about microwaving a damp sponge for 30 seconds to kill germs, but the reality is less pleasant. While some bacteria may be reduced, the smell afterwards can be awful and your kitchen might reek. Often it’s better and more hygienic to simply replace the sponge with a fresh one rather than relying on microwaving.
